The Bearing Application of Retaining Compounds

Bearing retaining compounds are used for installing bearings in housings or onto shafts to fill and secure the space between two adjoining components. They provide a strong bond between each component preventing any movements or micro-movements that cause fretting, abrasions, or grinding.

Securing a bearing unit with retaining compounds is especially beneficial when operating applications with a higher load transmission. They increase the overall axial strength of the adhesion between the adjoining components and prevent them from moving around.

Different types of retaining compounds exist, and one may be better suited for your specific job.

When choosing the right retaining compound for your application, consider factors such as:

  • The size of the gap between the adjoining components
  • Operating temperatures
  • Operating speeds
  • The required permanence of the bond

Retaining compounds are best suited for components that are intended to be more permanently adjoined. Some applications require frequent disassembly and so they may not be compatible with them.

When securing components, it is best to use retaining compounds in addition to mechanical retention methods, such as snap rings, machine shoulders and retaining nuts. For example, it is not advisable to rely solely on a retaining compound to secure a bearing on a shaft. Always make sure to securely fasten your components even when using bearing retaining compounds!
